Current Victorian Requirements

• Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom and every hallway connecting to bedrooms
• Properties built after 2021 require interconnected alarms throughout the dwelling
• Only photoelectric type alarms are compliant for new installations. Ionisation alarms are no longer accepted
• Alarms must be hardwired to mains power or have sealed 10 year lithium batteries
• Positioning must be on the ceiling, at least 300mm from any wall
• Alarms must not be more than 10 years old, check the manufacturing date on the unit
