Smoke Alarms FAQ

Everything you need to know about our smoke alarms service in Melbourne. Can't find your answer? Call us directly.

What are the legal requirements for smoke alarms in Victoria?
Victorian law requires working smoke alarms on every level of a home. Since 2021, rental properties must have interconnected smoke alarms (when one sounds, they all sound). Alarms must also be replaced every 10 years regardless of condition.
Do I need interconnected smoke alarms?
For rental properties, yes. Victorian law now requires all smoke alarms to be interconnected. For owner-occupied homes, it's strongly recommended but not yet mandatory. We install both hardwired and wireless interconnected systems.
How often should smoke alarms be tested?
Test monthly by pressing the test button. Replace batteries annually (or when the low-battery chirp sounds). Have a professional inspection annually for rental properties. All alarms must be replaced at the 10-year mark.
Can you provide a compliance certificate for my rental?
Yes, we issue a formal compliance certificate after testing that satisfies property managers and meets Victorian residential tenancy requirements. We can email certificates directly to your property manager.
My smoke alarm keeps beeping, what should I do?
A single chirp every 30-60 seconds usually means a low battery. Continuous beeping means smoke or fire, evacuate immediately. If chirping persists after a battery change, the unit may need replacement (they expire after 10 years).
Do you service commercial smoke alarms?
We handle residential and small commercial properties. For large commercial buildings with integrated fire panels, we can refer you to a licensed fire protection specialist and coordinate the work.
